Facepunch’s Harder Core update (released August 7, 2025) brings a dramatic refresh to Hardcore mode - and a complete revamp across Rust’s UI and performance systems to match the intensity.
Hardcore Mode Highlights:
- Fog of War Returns: The map is obscured at the start and gradually reveals as you explore, integrating with the normal map system rather than being a held item.
- Compass Required: Your location no longer displays unless you’ve equipped a compass in your belt; the usual compass UI is removed.
- No Weapon Crafting: Firearms can't be crafted or researched - loot and repairs only. To sharpen gameplay, ammunition crafting costs are multiplied by 5.
- Longer Respawns: Sleeping bag respawn cooldown jumps to 15 minutes, and beds now have a 10‑minute delay.
- Upkeep Doubled: Base upkeep costs are doubled to discourage sprawling compounds and encourage more dynamic, strategic base-building.
Other Major Improvements:
- Menu Redesign: A fresh interface featuring streamlined navigation, social bar, Quick Join, and enriched filter options including server mode and queue size.
- Visual Overhaul: Volumetric clouds and biome-specific fog transformer Rust’s atmospherics - offering immersive visuals and dynamic weather interactions.
- Performance Boosts: Up to 65% faster load times plus reduced memory usage (by 10–20%) thanks to optimized prefab loading and asset handling.
- Metal Detector Upgrades: Metal detectors can now locate weapons dropped by other players - even those from despawning backpacks - but only for a limited time
The Harder Core update turns the dial up with fewer conveniences, more risk, and an even greater focus on survival skills. Expect tougher loot conditions, stripped-down interfaces, and less room for error.
